Keyword research is the first step on the road to optimising your website and building off site links.  In order to be successful at attracting clients you have to know what they are searching for. There is no point in being number one in Google for a term that nobody Googles!  A great example of this is your name.  Chances are if you have a website address containing your name (as many therapists do) you will rank very well for it.  Unless someone is looking for you specifically though this is not going to bring you any clients because when people type terms into Google they look for a service or the issue they want to solve and often include the area that they live in.  But how do you know whether to put your efforts into building links for “counselling south Liverpool” or “counselling Liverpool” (substitute your city or town as neccesary)?

Three factors come into play here:

  1. The number of people searching for the term.
  2. The competitiveness of the term.
  3. The likihood that someone searching for that term will actually buy something from you or contact you for the service you offer.

A good keyword researcher will identify all of these factors for you and advise when it is not sensible to persue a particular keyword.  For example, if there are fifty people a month searching for the term “counselling south Liverpool” and very little competition for the term, it makes more sense to go after that keyword and rank number one for it in, say, three months, than to persue “counselling Liverpool” which has 100 people a month searhing for it but is extremely competitive and may take twelve months to get to number one for.
